Dresden is a phoenix, rebuilt after a time of war and destruction to flourish on the banks of the Elbe with its culture and unique identity. In Lonely Planet's ranking, the capital of Saxony has been selected as one of the best tourist destinations for 2023.
Dresden used to be the cultural centre of Germany, but unfortunately it was almost destroyed by bombing at the end of World War II. Today, the city has risen from the ashes and shines again in the light of its architecture but remembers every episode of its history. It is called ‚Florence on the Elba‘ because the baroque architecture gives it grandeur.
Today Dresden is divided into two parts - Altstadt, the old town, and Neustadt, the new town. The Altmarkt (Old Market) has existed since the 13th century and occupies one of the city's squares. Here, the traditional Christmas market (Striezelmarkt), one of the most famous in Europe, takes place. The Frühjahrsmarkt (Spring Market) usually opens at the end of April or the beginning of May, and in September and October the square hosts the Striezelmarkt (Autumn Market).
