Veliko Tarnovo is a majestic city located on the Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora hills. Bulgaria's history is written on every stone in the old capital. The archaeological excavations on Tsarevets Hill revealed an ancient Thracian settlement that existed in the 3rd century BC. In the Middle Ages, the city was called Tsarevgrad and was the crown jewel of the Bulgarian rulers. In 1185, brothers Asen and Peter announced in the St. Dimitar church the end of the Byzantine domination, which lasted 167 years and they proclaimed Tarnovo the capital of the new Bulgarian kingdom. After the fall of Bulgaria under Turkish slavery, Tarnovo became a centre of Bulgarian national resistance. On February 10, 1879, the Turnovo constitution was signed here.
With the decision of the National Assembly of April 16, 2019, Veliko Tarnovo was declared the historical and spiritual capital of Bulgaria.
There are countless attractions in Veliko Tarnovo. History peers from every window and every door. The cobblestones on the old streets bear the traces of the old Bulgarians, the rulers of literature and the spiritual strength of the Bulgarian nation.
